A well-received and respected organization, but undeservedly so. In the decade I received their services I was involved in a string of abuse and mistreatment, and my needs and self were routinely dismissed and ignored, to a degree that has left me traumatized and struggling as a young adult.In the building on S. Winooski Ave. there is a basement apartment where people are locked up. \"For their own safety\" is what they insist, but its really for punishment; you are locked inside it, often for days at a time, with one employee supervising you, and you have only Chef Boyardee or similar, low-quality non-perishable items to eat, you are discouraged from talking to the employee watching over you, and you are locked into the bedroom at night.Many of the social workers actively working with clients are in the 2227 age range, fresh out of college and/or in grad school, well-meaning but young and unready for the requirements of the position. Case managers are mostly in the 273 age range; these are the figures who commit the majority of abuse. They have vastly inflated ideas of their competency and regularly refuse to acknowledge their charges wishes and needs. Self-agency is denied and demonized, and vital life skills are intentionally withheld from clients even while employees proclaim to be teaching them.Many former employees have reported that they enjoyed serving the community in this fashion, but found the working environment at Howard stressful and unhealthy, as bosses are Old-School, authoritarian and dismissive, and resist change of any kind. They report the pay for the majority of employees, and the organization lacks adequate checks and balances. I have seen this dismissive and cruel treatment myself, as a former patient of theirs. This is a toxic, terrible organization fraught with abuse and incompetency, and it should be legally investigated.My mother, Gillian Eaton, is on the board of directors. She, a devout Christian, abused all four of her children for years emotionally and verbally, driving one of her children to attempt suicide at age 13, and another of her children into drug use later in life. This organization has endlessly helped her and covered for her, and she has helped it greatly in turn. more ...
