Attorney General Letitia James Takes Action Against Housing Discrimination in Westchester County

In a significant move to combat housing discrimination and safeguard the rights of low-income tenants in Westchester County, Attorney General Letitia James has recently made a crucial announcement. On Tuesday, October 10, 2023, Attorney General James unveiled a groundbreaking agreement with the real estate company, Platzer International Group, and its owners, following the discovery that they had been involved in denying housing opportunities to low-income New Yorkers holding Section 8 housing choice vouchers.

Platzer International Group, which owns and manages an extensive portfolio of over 200 residential units, with a concentration in areas such as Pelham Manor, New Rochelle, and Rye, will now be required to make substantial changes in their housing allocation practices. Specifically, the agreement mandates that the company set aside 20 of its units to be exclusively available for applicants utilizing Section 8 vouchers or other housing subsidies.

The agreement with Platzer International Group requires them to waive broker fees for tenants using housing subsidies for five years, reducing financial burdens on low-income tenants. Attorney General Letitia James underlined the importance of fair housing opportunities for all, stating that housing is a fundamental right, and discrimination against low-income individuals, especially voucher users, is unacceptable. This agreement represents a significant stride in combating housing discrimination, providing hope for those struggling to find housing due to economic constraints. It also demonstrates the commitment of Platzer International Group to enhance access to housing for low-income residents, moving Westchester County towards a more inclusive and equitable future.
