AMHA Invites Landlords to Join Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program

Ohio – October 27, 2023

The Ashtabula Metropolitan Housing Authority (AMHA) is actively seeking landlords to participate in the Housing Choice Voucher Program, previously known as Section 8. This Section 8 initiative provides rental housing assistance and puts the power of choice in the hands of both tenants and property owners.

Contrary to misconceptions, AMHA Director Sean Adams emphasized that Section 8 renters do not typically damage properties. The Section 8 program is designed to benefit both landlords and tenants by facilitating a mutually beneficial arrangement, with both parties contributing a portion of the rent directly to the private landlord.

As the housing market experiences high property sale prices, Amy Coursen, a board member, noted that the shortage of available housing is partly attributed to landlords selling their properties. The Housing Choice Voucher Program (Section 8) offers an opportunity for property owners to provide safe and stable housing while receiving financial support through the Section 8 program.

In other business discussed during the meeting:

  1. Insurance recently reimbursed AMHA with $47,000 to replace a truck that caught fire.
  2. Mark Astorino, Board President, stressed the importance of following the recommendations of the last audit to ensure a successful upcoming audit.
  3. Sean Adams reported that cross-job training is scheduled for all AMHA departments, including CPR certification. He emphasized the significance of CPR training, stating that having certified individuals on staff is a prudent measure.

During the public comment portion of the meeting, residents raised concerns. One resident voiced dissatisfaction with cable TV issues that require frequent reboots. Another expressed hopes that AMHA will ensure proper heating during the winter, noting that the hallways can become uncomfortably cold.

Another concern raised was related to a bedbug infestation, causing distress to a neighbor. Finally, new resident Nancy Carr expressed her satisfaction with her apartment and pledged to volunteer at the upcoming community Thanksgiving dinner.

AMHA’s efforts to engage landlords in the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program reflect their commitment to addressing housing challenges and fostering positive relationships between landlords and tenants in Ashtabula.
