When I moved to the area in 2010, it was rampant with crime and gangs. However, two terrible events changed things: a bullet was fired at someone on Laguna Street and went through the building, hitting an 11-year-old girl who luckily survived; the same week a man was shot point blank outside of a convenience store due to gang violence. The wealthy neighbors across the street applied pressure which resulted in all gang members leaving and crime decreasing. Nowadays all that is seen is people smoking marijuana; making it quite a mellow community. The management has been neglectful in providing basic amenities such as heat, plumbing, and refrigerators. Investigations are underway by the Housing Authority while rent remains 30% of income - not bad for living close to Van Ness and several bus lines! Nobody chose this place - we were assigned units based on our number on the Public Housing Waiting List which had been closed for over 10 years (it took me 2 years from submitting my application).
