When we first came in to see the unit, a brief inspection showed great wear and tear, particularly in the carpets. However, we were assured this would all be redone and cleaned and, innocently, proceeded to sign our contract prior to viewing the finalized apartment. Lesson learned. When the unit was finally leased to us, it was in dismal state. Property owners had taken out old carpeting, repainted, and, reportedly, had had the apartment cleaned, but the bathrooms were horrid and stained, the pantry and cupboards were grimy, and the oven and stove appeared to have never been cleaned at all. We soon learned that the building itself is poorly constructed, with gaps in between the walls and flooring that allowed for animals (cockroaches and spiders especially) to come in. Every corner of the apartment smelled of cigarettes and it would not be made better by any number of fresh scents and cleaning products. The water in the kitchen and bathrooms would run either freezing cold or scalding hot and would hold a deep smell of chlorine at all times.About a day after we moved in, we found rat droppings in the heating closet, which we quickly reported to the property manager. Two weeks later, we came home to find small items in our apartment shifted (mainly in the bottom area of the pantry and the lowest shelf of our linen closet). We contacted the property manager and expressed our worry that a rodent might be present in the apartment. Her response, \"I havent personally seen any rodents in the building.\" She called the exterminator, who offered us some small mice traps to set on the floor, but items kept being moved and we soon found more droppings. About a month went by without any progress, during which we were forced to stay elsewhere while continuing to pay rent. Finally, we asked to have our contract dissolved, as the property owners were not fulfilling their side of our agreement in providing us adequate housing. What ensued was months of inane back and forth and legalese that ended in us forfeiting our deposit and paying for about 5 months of rent after residing at Hawthorne Village for all of 2 weeks. To my knowledge, the pest problem had not been resolved by the time we were finally freed from our contract.Im sure this review will at some point be replied to by the property manager with some banal explanation attempting to shift blame. Dont buy it. More importantly, dont rent it.more ...hide ...
