Look for dirt, mold, air leaks around windows and doors, as well as the quality of the carpet and flooring, as well as any strange odors (potentially from pet damage). If you're noise-sensitive, bear in mind that the construction is of sub-par quality, meaning you can hear someone sneeze in the next unit. Also, the ceiling, walls and floor vibrate easily and a glass on a coffee table can shake. At night, make sure to walk around the property and check for functioning lighting near where you park your car. Don't just assume the garage you are assigned is close to your unit. Walking from the next street with groceries, with no lights, can be a nerve-wracking experience. Ask your lease agent that showed you the functioning model to finalize the updates and repairs required for your unit before you sign the documents. If you are told you can't see the unit while it's being worked on but will be move-in ready when you get the keys, then it's best to go elsewhere.
