Though there are plenty of more convenient alternatives out there, you may find some underpriced, excellent pieces of art if you look closely. It's almost like taking a free, unusual tour through the past or going on a hunt for hidden treasure. You may also be able to purchase some interesting books in the basement market. If you want to get a better idea of what to expect, take some time to look at the amazing backgrounds of the artists online. And if you're lucky enough to come across a friendly one, their stories are sure to be captivating. There may even be some highly accomplished people living there, though they're not visible in the visual arts. There are also plenty of books to read in order to learn about the art history of NYC, so hurry before fading memories and health issues make it impossible. Maybe in ten years, when the older generation makes room for young, energetic visual artists, an open house will be worth it. Even some renovations benefit the subsidized residents, but not the visitors. The one gallery open to everyone is in a great spot, but you may have difficulty finding parking.more ...hide ...
