Having spent a year in this shelter from July 2017 to August 2018, it was easily the worse period of my life. Even in 2021, I find it hard to forget. The worst treatment imaginable was given by staff who were deliberately trying to make me feel inferior. This led me to seek professional help for the mental trauma that I had to endure. For example, fire drills were conducted at 6:00 AM and if we did not exit our rooms, a security guard would open the door to the women's quarters while they were still sleeping. I was refused a meal from the cafeteria if I was even a minute late. This left my children and I starving until the next meal time. The case worker treated me disrespectfully even though I have a Master's degree. A security guard stopped me from entering the building until my children finished their daycare and I had to wait outside for two hours. A security guard opened my room at midnight to confirm the number of my children even though they had already checked when we arrived. Can you imagine waking up to find someone in your room in the middle of the night? A security guard also refused to bring the elevator down to the basement while I had a thrombosis in my leg and was unable to climb the stairsmore ...hide ...
