What can I say about this building? The interior and finishes are nice enough, but the amenities are quite basic, as one would expect from a low-income building. During the first year it was open, there were multiple drug dealers on each floor, though there was only about one per floor by the time we left. Management can't do much (or so we were told; I understand it can be hard to evict people), so if you move in here, be prepared for some trouble. During our stay, three bikes were stolen from the supposedly secure bike room. People are regularly found sleeping in the stairwells; this is not a secure building since the back gate is often left open. I just heard that the building is now infested with bedbugs. We were fortunate to be able to get our lives back on track, so we left at the right time. Most of the tenants were lovely, though it only takes a few bad apples to spoil the bunch. The walls are very thick, but the ceiling and floors aren't. If you need to rent a low-income apartment, this isn't the worst building; I've heard of much worse, but it definitely has many issues that a normal, market-rate building wouldn't. more ... hide ...

I was even asked to speak at the opening ceremony, where the mayor had attended. I felt that my life was improving. When I was 57, I moved in, although this happiness was short-lived. The elevator would cease to function for days, especially problematic for me as I was on the seventh floor. I was understanding of the fact that new buildings have their kinks to be worked out, yet that understanding did not last. Not only was the elevator broken, there was no manager on-site to help those with disabilities or handicaps out of their apartments. The last time it was out for 15 days, preventing me from having my surgery as I was unable to climb seven flights of stairs after my back surgery. Unfortunately, my neighbour who needed a kidney transplant ended up having a heart attack and passed away at only 38 years old. The drugs were a problem as well, as there was traffic at all hours of the day. As a Chemical Dependency Professional, I attempted to help some of those I thought wanted it, but this resulted in me being robbed and a knife pulled on me. The lack of security was palpable, with homeless people sleeping in the lobby and stairwell. The laundry rooms were never cleaned and the brand-new building was deteriorating before my eyes. My advice to anyone considering moving to Abbey Lincoln: don't. more ... hide ...
