During my first month there, my apartment was damaged by smoke and water from the unit above that caught fire. But the worst incident occurred during the Labor Day weekend, when the sewage backed up into my apartment three times. On a Friday night, the owner allowed me and my son, cat and belongings to stay in sewage water until Tuesday afternoon before it was cleaned. She proposed to move me to an upper unit, but there was no maintenance personnel to make it inhabitable. Consequently, I stayed in the same apartment and the sewage backed up again when I was away at work. I pressed for a move to an upper unit, but she kept putting me off until I gave her a thirty-day notice and vacated. Throughout the three months I waited for the move, I was surrounded by mold and became sick with upper respiratory infection and bronchitis. I lost my belongings in the sewage water and, as a result, I am unable to get renters insurance. Additionally, she wrote me a letter promising to return my deposit, but she did not.more ...hide ...
