We had gotten to know the manager and her family very well. A few months later, we were served with a summons. They were suing us for the last month's rent and damages. They asserted that they had not been given our check (thankfully I had evidence that it had been cashed) and tried to hold us liable for a $1000 leak in the bathroom ceiling. We had reported it multiple times and it had never been fixed. It emerged that the man we were told was the maintenance guy was not actually the maintenance guy, so it was never relayed to the manager. We asked why we had to go to court. Why hadn't they alerted us earlier? It happened that they had "attempted" to get in touch with us by delivering notifications to the apartment in their building that we had just moved out of...?? Eventually, they got us for a new carpet as we were two months away from the "normal wear and tear 3 year guarantee" plus court costs; but they had made an effort for a lot more. Bringing photographs of damage in another apartment and claiming it was ours. (Grateful again that I was able to disprove this).
